Hello, world

This site now has bits and bytes. Both are numbered in binary - this is bit 1, the next one will be 10. To explain why this site exists, we'll need some bits first.

I've always enjoyed learning things. And figuring things out. And thēēen building things from what I just learned. Same bits, over and over, always busy looking forward to the next thing, but never spending the time to take a snapshot.

The blunt truth is - I've always enjoyed the mechanics and craft of creating quality content as much as high quality content itself. For example - to build a feature in a static website that generates og:image1 tag images with article title, category, cool background, dynamic layout, dynamic image within that image etc. Or shoot promotional videos for orienteering cup or to learn how to use multiple flashlights in outdoor photography with sunlight in play. Advances in smartphone cameras have reduced upfront skill required to make good photos and by proxy my interest in picking up that heavy DSLR, so then I leaned back into analog photography with even heavier camera and lenses.

Premiere, After Effects, Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, Lightroom... I've crashed.exe all of them over the years. When typesetting a layout file for 3rd 100+ page book2, I said #&@% it and programmed it like a website that bakes pages into printable PDF.

Somehow, for the past decade I've also managed to avoid digital public spaces and by proxy avoided sharing widely what I have learned or built. I learned things for myself without a need to scream into digital cat /dev/random > /dev/null3, which is sometimes what the internet feels like these days. I've always wanted to write those little bits down in my own micro space that looks and feels and functions just the way I like. This space is also for my own experiments, Easter eggs, bits and bobbins.

So far I've not explained why bits and bytes, have I? Bits will be short pieces of things I've learned, they come as they are. Bytes are longer, more expanded context or maybe longer story itself. To take a single bite of it all - this right now is just a snapshot.

  1. The preview picture you see when sharing a link in any chat or DM. This site doesn't have them yet (ha ha). ↩︎

  2. It's a story for another time. ↩︎

  3. Linux command that combines generating random values and then immediately discards all the work output. ↩︎
